Day 209: 4 June 2026
Short Story -- Summer Days
She remembered being a young girl, haunting the edge of the river in the summer. She and her brothers would look for toads and snails and interesting rocks. They’d each choose sticks and have races watching them travel with the current down the river.
She couldn’t remember the last time she’d thought about it.
About how good those summers of her childhood had been. They weren’t flashy. But they were good.
They’d come home at dusk chattering about their day, bits of silt and mud here and there.
She wondered if kids these days ever had summers like that.
Now that there were iPads and Netflix and twenty different summer programmes that they could get signed up for.
She figured those types of summers were still possible but probably less appreciated.
She wondered how many parents nowadays would feel comfortable giving their kids that sort of freedom. She supposed the world had always been a bit dangerous, but sit just seemed more so now with the news and social media.
She stretched out on the grass enjoying the last rays of sun.
Another day come and gone.
